The Seance

A Seance is a sitting organised for the purpose of recieving communication from the dead or a physical manifestation of a spirit.
Seances normally involve a medium, although many are undertaken by laymen in the hopes that they will be visited.

THE FIRST SEANCES
The first recorded seance occurred in 1659, but there was little documentation or widespread interest until the Fox sisters introduced spiritualism in the 1800's. After that, seances were conducted regularly around the world, and they have remained popular ever since. There are many codes of etiquette involved in holding a seance. These include admitting few strangers, ensuring that they last no more than two hours, arranging chairs around a circular table with no more than eight sitters, avoiding touching the medium and begining with the Lord's prayer, in order to prevent unwanted spiritual activity.

WHAT HAPPENS?
The first indication of spiritual activity can be experienced as a cold rush of air. If the medium is transfigural or clairvoyant, she or he may begin automatic writing, or announce the arrival of a spirit.

Experts recommend that seances are not undertaken without a medium, who can sense if any danger is present, and close off communication.
Seances are considered to be 'uncontrolled' forms of communication and therefore susceptible to potential dangers.

WHITE HOUSE MYSTERIES
According to case histories, a variety of paranormal activities has occurred during seances. In his diary, President Abraham Lincoln claimed to have seen two piano's levitate.
Another White House inhabitant, Eleanor Roosevelt, was reported to have become friends with Abraham Lincoln through her many seances over the years.
A cigar has levitated from an observers pocket to a mediums mouth and a fur coat has disappeared, then dropped from the ceiling.
Liquids have travelled from one glass to another, Mediums have levitated themselves, sometimes out of one window and in another.
